From the end of September to the beginning of October, men and women were on the attack for the Asian Tour, with 2 ATP 500, 1 ATP 1000 and 2 WTA 1000 events. Here’s a look at the results.
After another epic confrontation with world No.1 Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz was back in the spotlight at the ATP 500 in Beijing, winning his 4th Title of the season. At the same time, they broke the record for the longest men’s singles match at the China Open, with 3 hours 21 minutes played!
After Hamburg, it was in Tokyo that Fils triumphed over Ugo Humbert in the 32nd Franco-French Open final. After going through the rounds one by one and eliminating such big names as Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Holger Rune, Fils once again showed his resilience in this final, after a fine battle lasting over 3 hours and saving a match point in the tie-break of the second set.
On the WTA side, the American won her second Title of the season at the WTA 1000 Beijing, defeating Czech Karolina Muchova in 2 sets 6/1 – 6/3. This victory enabled her to return to world number four rank after dropping out of the Top 5 at the beginning of September.
For this latest edition of the Wuhan WTA 1000, Sabalenka once again proved unbeatable with her 17th consecutive victory on these courts. She defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng (ranked 7th) in her lands in three sets, 6/3 – 5/7 – 6/3, after a hard-fought final.
A week after his defeat in Beijing, the young Italian was able to quickly count on another victory at the ATP 1000 Shanghai to clinch his 7th Title of the season. Faced with his prestigious predecessor Novak Djokovic, Sinner didn’t waver: after a tight first set, he finally prevailed 7/6 – 6/3.
The results of the Asian Tour were impressive, with a new generation of players making their mark on the circuit. And to mark the occasion, a number of legends retired to make way for new names on the world tennis scene.
The Legend Rafael Nadal has chosen the Davis Cup, to be held in Malaga, Spain, to bid farewell to his fans. At the age of 38 and with a career marked by 92 Titles, including 22 in the Grand Slam (14 French Opens, 4 US Opens, 2 Australian Opens and 2 Wimbledons), Nadal is retiring, battered by injuries that have prevented him from playing at the highest level. His heartbreaking announcement was orchestrated in a 5-minute video on his social networks.
